Two way radio batteries
When buying two-way radio there are a number of things to keep in mind, depending on your specific needs, application and requirements. A battery is one of radio's most important parts as it influences radius of work, quality of communication and time of autonomous work.
The top brands in two-way radios are Motorola, BlackBox, Cobra, Kenwood, Midland, and Yaesu-Vertex. Manufacturers use different batteries with their two-way radios.
Let's briefly compare characteristics of main battery types present on the market.
The most commonly used battery for two way radios, NiCd batteries are known and liked for their long life, durability and steady high capacity. Among the main advantages of these batteries we can figure out low cost and high resistance for temperature variations.
The main disadvantage of a nickel cadmium battery is its susceptibility to "memory effect," meaning that the battery gradually loses its capacity for full recharging if it is repeatedly recharged before its capacity has been fully drained. Because of this, nickel-based batteries (both NiCd and NiMH) are relatively high maintenance.
A NiMH battery uses a hydrogen-absorbing alloy instead of cadmium for its negative electrodes; it starts with a higher energy density than NiCd battery but has a shorter cycle life.
Lithium ion (Li-ion) are among the newest batteries available, these are significantly lighter and lower maintenance than NiCd or NiMH batteries and are gaining in popularity for two way radio use.
Unlike the NiCd and NiMH cells that exhibit very similar characteristics the Li-ion cell is quite different. It has been shown to be able to withstand over 1000 charge/discharge cycles and still be able to hold 80% of its initial capacity. NiCds offer up to around 500 cycles, although this is very dependent upon the way they are used. A badly treated cell may only give 50 or 100. NiMH cells are even worse, and this is one of the main areas receiving development. They are only able to give 500 cycles at the very best before their capacity drops to 80% of the initial charge rating.
Lithium-ion batteries are good to use in retail, aviation, hospitality as it is often necessary to work overtime and where light weight and high capacity batteries are required.
Manufacturers also suggest two way radio models where we can use different types of batteries for using them in different conditions, for example new TK-2140/3140 Kenwood radios offer a choice of Ni-Cd, Ni-MH and Li-Ion battery packs for various uses. Substituting lithium-ion with nickel-based will require chargers specifically suited for this chemistry. While nickel-cadmium and nickel-metal-hydride can often share the same charger, lithium-ion uses a different charge algorithm.
Since two way radios are widely used in a variety of public safety applications by police, fire and EMS professionals for emergency work, longer runtimes are very critical. While such a battery solution will be marginally more expensive ? it will provide greater reliability, security and comfort in such dangerous scenarios. Nowadays there is a wide choice of batteries with higher capacity present on the market: The Motorola RLN6305 high capacity lithium ion rechargeable battery, Motorola RLN6308 Ultra High Capacity Li-Ion Battery, 1800mAh 7.2V Icom BP209 two way radio battery, Ni-MH Yaesu-Vertex Radio Battery (YV15H1-C, Capacity: 1400 mAH.) etc. You can use original or replacement batteries with your two-way radio. Replacement batteries typically carry lower prices than manufacturer brand names. Usually replacement batteries are sold with certain product manufacturers names for descriptive purposes, and to demonstrate compatibility.

why wont my icom ic-7h Mobile transceiver turn on?
ive recently been given a icom ic-t7h transceiver and i charged the battery and hooked it up to the power supply and both or either of the combonations of power input dont work and my other radio is poop so i really want this to work ps it hasent been turned on in a few years if that has anything to do with it and all input is welcomed and im asking this because i recently got HAM licensed and would really would like to use this. THANKS!
the CPU reset is a good idea... but, the newer transceivers do not have a common on/off button. You must hold the button in until the radio awakens, and then in again to turn the radio off.
